It's a big day in the history of aviation!
On this day in 1927, Charles Lindbergh landed in Paris after the first solo Atlantic air crossing. It's hard to believe that was less than 100 years ago - hundreds of planes from Gatwick now cross the Atlantic every day!
If a Royal Wedding isn't an excuse to celebrate, we don't know what is! 🎉
In case you're travelling through Gatwick, retailers like WHSmith and Cath Kidston are celebrating too! Stock up on supplies at our North and South Terminals.

"Our objective is to get anywhere on the airfield within two minutes. The difference between us and a normal Fire Service is that our main job is to protect the runway - specialising in aircraft incidents. So, if the alarms go off, everyone scrambles to their vehicles and moves to standby positions ready to deploy.
We’ve got a great training facility, so we can practise for every possible scenario. Other firefighters actually come here to train. Gatwick is exciting with more variety and resource than some other airports, and I love that.
We also cover medical calls, so will give life support if needed. If you do have a hard time, there’s top support in the team to help you out. Emergency call outs can be unpredictable - we have periods where it’s one after another, and then it can be quiet for a while.
I did five years in the Royal Marines, before moving into this area of work. It’s a similar mind set and quite a few of my colleagues are ex-military too. It’s all about preparation here - and we’re definitely well prepared.”
To celebrate National Firefighter Day, Luke told us all about his job as a fire and rescue officer at Gatwick. Three years in, Luke is team leader of a 16-strong ‘watch’, doing 12 hour shifts round the clock.
We're throwing it back to 1958 today!

Blast from the past! ✈ 🚗
This picture of a British Caledonian Cargo plane was taken 28 years ago in 1990. Time flies!
Would you know the name of this aircraft? ✈
Clue: it has been residing on our airfield since it had engine problems in the 90s - and there are only four left in the world!
It is - of course - the Handley Page Herald G-CEXP - soon to be moving to Wales for a full restoration by UK Heritage Aviation Trust.
Liquids over 100ml aren't allowed through security. "Not many people know that Gatwick has its own meteorologists. Today it’s actually hotter here than in LA! We’re here to help the airport plan ahead, as well as giving an occasional forecast to colleagues.
I’ve been with the Met Office for six years, and at Gatwick for just over a year. I realised I wanted to do meteorology when I was about 14 or 15. We’d gone on a family holiday and I decided that weather was just awesome! After studying, I worked in search and rescue all over the world. I even lived on a tropical island for seven months. Eventually I ended up here at Gatwick where, admittedly, it’s not as hot! I chose Gatwick for a few reasons: I’m from Horsham originally, and I knew I wanted to work in aviation. Also, in this job you spend a lot of time talking – which I love - and you’re seen as a real part of the wider airport family. The team I’m on has three permanent staff and one detachee. We're here 365 days a year. I worked on Christmas Day and have done for the last four in a row now, but it’s good fun - especially when the weather’s ‘quiet!’ You can get a pretty good idea of what the weather’s going to be like around five days ahead, but we do provide an outlook for 15 days.”
Jenna McGregor is Senior Operations Meteorologist and team leader at Gatwick. She’s yet to find a ‘perfect weather day’ - “there’s always something to consider!”

“We’ve had this trip planned from the day she was born, really!
I travel to Jamaica every two years, but this is a real once-in-a-lifetime experience. I did the same trip with my daughter when she was little, and now it’s my granddaughter Sariah’s turn.
We’re flying to Kingston and taking Sariah to meet her great-grandfather for the first time. We’re going to be over there for almost a month – such a lovely experience for her. She may even pick up some Jamaican Patois while she’s there!
I’m taking snapshots of it all - I’ve got pictures of her in the Kids Zone, in Nando’s and there’s one with a lovely plane on the tarmac in the background too - it’s like a timeline, for her and her mum - who’s called me three or four times already."
We caught up with Jacqueline and her four-year-old granddaughter Sariah in departures. Their trip of a lifetime will also include a detour over to Disney World before celebrating her great grandfather’s 86th birthday!
